The Sherburne-Earlville Middle School is proud to announce its newest members to the Robert C. Benedict Jr. Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at an induction ceremony held every year.
Â
National Junior Honor Society selection process.
Candidates are selected from students in grades six, seven and eight who have been enrolled in the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District for at least one semester and have maintained from sixth grade to the time of selection a cumulative average of 94 or above (high honor).
Each student who meets the academic requirements is given a survey to fill out. This is an opportunity for those students to let the faculty council know about their leadership, service, and citizenship activities both in school and in the community. Although returning the survey does not automatically guarantee selection, only those students who return their completed survey by the specified date are considered for membership.
The following criteria are used in evaluating candidates for membership in the National Junior Honor Society:
A. Scholarship
Each student must have a cumulative average of at least 94 (high honor). This average will be calculated using grades from sixth grade through the first semester of the selection year.
B. Leadership
The number of offices a student has held in school or community organizations may be considered as evidence of leadership by the Faculty Council, but is not necessary for selection. The Council believes that leadership can also be demonstrated outside of elected offices, and will consider students who inspire positive attitudes in others, demonstrate academic initiative, and are dependable in any responsibility accepted.
C. Service
The Faculty Council will consider students who have made a contribution to the school, their classmates, and/or their community. Service may also be demonstrated by working well with others and being willing to represent the school in activities and competitions.
D. Character
The Council will look for those students who comply with school regulations, take criticism willingly, and are honest, reliable, courteous, respectful, and concerned for others.
E. Citizenship
Citizenship may be assessed in terms of attitudes regarding freedom, justice, patriotism, and respect for fellow human beings. Participation in scouting, the Red Cross, school clubs, and similar organizations may also be considered.
